To better serve the needs of its growing patient population, AAH Aurora Sinai Medical Center (ASMC) and Aurora UW Medical Group (AUWMG) developed a strategic plan to relocate two AUWMG clinics. The project was delivered in several phases to minimize disruptions to patients, caregivers, and daily hospital operations within a construction timeframe of approximately six months.
Zimmerman provided architectural planning and design as part of an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) team, which included design engineers, contractors and subcontractors, caregivers, campus support, facilities personnel, and AAH Planning Design and Construction leadership. IPD’s focus on early involvement for all team members facilitated cohesive and unified planning, design, and construction services for the project.
The IPD team effectively streamlined delivery, which resulted in better management and delivery outcomes while documenting lessons learned for future projects requiring similar fast-track delivery of services. The IPD team identified and minimized project risks and evaluated opportunities collaboratively.
The IPD team utilized a variety of Lean design principles and tools throughout the planning process, including Kaizen events to eliminate waste, improve operations, and bring innovation to the project. In addition to planning and design, the Kaizen event sought specific improvements in the patient experience, patient and caregiver flows and access to care, and collaboration opportunities to enhance patient care.
A standard 3D modeling platform enabled overall design coordination with an “always current” model and a Target Value Design approach that improved cost forecasting and management.
