Milwaukee Public Library Good Hope Road Branch

Milwaukee Public Library (MPL) and the City of Milwaukee developed a public/private initiative to replace a number of existing older branch libraries throughout the city. The new branch libraries occupy condominium-style spaces, of various sizes, within overall mixed-use developments, funded by local private developers. MPL owns the library spaces and independently engages library design firms to provide final designs for the suites they occupy.

Zimmerman was selected to provide program review, interior architecture, and interior design for the 17,500 sq. ft. replacement of the Good Hope Road branch. The project is designed to 21st Century library standards and serves as a catalytic neighborhood revitalization project.

The Good Hope Road library includes a variety of flexible, open spaces including a common community center, children’s learning area, maker space, employment resource center, meeting rooms of various sizes, stacks for hard copy volumes and numerous casual spaces for patrons to gather, relax and enjoy the library’s many amenities. Ample electrical outlets to power devices and open access to public wifi help provide greater access to computers and technology.

Additional design considerations include open sightlines; an abundance of windows allowing ample daylight into the space, engaging views out, integrating high-performance mechanical and security systems; and acoustics adjacent to the children’s area.
