The City of Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Public Library developed an innovative public-private partnership to replace several aging branch libraries throughout the city. These new branches occupy dynamic condominium-style spaces within larger mixed-use developments. The mixed-use developments are funded by local private developers. The library independently engages architectural design firms to complete the build-out of the tenant spaces they occupy.
Zimmerman was selected to lead the design for the tenant improvement of the Good Hope Road branch replacement. We provided comprehensive program review, interior architecture, and interior design. We designed the 17,500 sq. ft. project to meet modern, 21st-century library standards. This new facility now serves as a powerful catalyst for neighborhood revitalization.
The Good Hope Road library includes highly flexible, open environments. Visitors enjoy a vibrant community center and a children’s learning area. The layout features a modern maker space and an employment resource center. We included meeting rooms, traditional book stacks, and numerous casual gathering spaces. Patrons can relax and enjoy the facility’s many amenities. Ample electrical outlets and public Wi-Fi ensure excellent technology access.
Additional design considerations include clear, open sightlines throughout the building. Abundant windows allow daylight to flood the interior space and provide engaging outward views for all patrons. We seamlessly integrated high-performance mechanical and modern security systems, and optimized the acoustics adjacent to the active children’s area.
