Green County Family YMCA

The Green County Family YMCA embarked on a strategic planning process to better serve its community’s growing needs for childcare and healthy recreational living. Recognizing the limitations of its existing facilities, the YMCA partnered with Zimmerman to develop a comprehensive master plan. This plan evaluated current spaces, projected future needs, and explored opportunities for on-site growth.

Zimmerman’s work included programming, code analysis, concept-level site and building design, and planning for future renovations. Key priorities included identifying optimal locations for a childcare and youth development center, analyzing areas for expansion and renovation, and making informed decisions based on the condition and lifespan of existing facilities. The existing YMCA building, originally constructed with multiple additions over time, served as the foundation for this vision.

The project, completed in 2025, modernized the facility while addressing community priorities. A significant childcare addition features direct access to secure outdoor play areas, ensuring safety, visibility, and privacy. The design also incorporates extensive use of glass to bring natural light into previously windowless spaces, creating a more welcoming and vibrant environment.

The updated facility includes spaces for partnerships with organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, MultiCultural Outreach Program (MCOP), and others, further enhancing the YMCA’s role as a community hub. This thoughtful approach has provided the Green County Family YMCA with updated, functional spaces that support its mission to help the community thrive.
